Joey Molland, the last surviving member of Badfinger, has passed away at 77. Badfinger’s official page shared the heartbreaking news of his death on Sunday.
According to details, Badfinger’s official page stated, “The day we never wanted to see has arrived,” the statement began. “Joey (Joseph Charles) Molland passed away last night at 11:39 PM CST, surrounded by Mary, his two sons, and other family members.”
The statement continued, “Once I receive details about the arrangements, I will share them here. I was asleep when it happened and woke up to this news, so I apologize for the delay. I’ve already seen several posts and messages offering condolences. Thank you.”
“Although I knew his condition was serious, it was still a shock. If you’re reading this for the first time, I’m sure it is for you as well. Long Live Badfinger. Thank you, Joey, for keeping the band’s music alive and for being a friend to us all,” the message concluded.
Molland’s cause of death has not been disclosed. His passing follows social media updates from his partner, Mary, who revealed in December that he was in the ICU. A GoFundMe page was launched in January to support his medical expenses.
A key figure in Badfinger’s legacy, Molland joined the band—originally known as The Iveys—in 1969, contributing as a songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist. His bandmates, Pete Ham and Tom Evans, both died by suicide, Ham in 1975 and Evans eight years later. Molland was also a close friend of The Beatles and played guitar on several John Lennon tracks.
