KU wins HEC Intervarsity Zone “G” cricket tournament

KARACHI: The cricket team of the University of Karachi (KU) has won the HEC  Intervarsity Zone “G” Cricket Tournament by beating Hamdard University by four wickets in the final at Madinat-al Hikmah sports ground.

According to details, the tournament was organized by Hamdard University as per Higher Education Commission’s annual sporting calendar 2020-21.

While batting first, Hamdard University managed to put up 136 runs total in its 20 overs. The University of Karachi successfully chased the target in the 19th over with the loss of six wickets.

As many as 12 university teams participated in the event including Iqra University, Ilma University, SZABIST, PAF-KIET, IoBM, SSUET, NED, University of Karachi, Hamdard University, SBB Dewan University, PIMSAT and IBA.

The opening match of the tournament was played between Hamdard University and IoBM on Friday. Semi-Finals were also played on the same day. In the first semi-final, Hamdard University defeated NED and in the second semi-final KU secured the final playoff by comprehensively beating Iqra University.

Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood Iraqi Vice Chancellor University of Karachi – was invited as a chief guest for the final concluding ceremony. VC of different universities including Prof. Dr. Aurangzaib Khan VC Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Deewan University, Prof. Dr. Waseem A Qazi, VC Iqra University, as well as faculty members of Hamdard University and a large number of students watched the final and supported their teams.

In the concluding ceremony Professor, Dr. Syed Shabib-ul-Hassan Vice Chancellor Hamdard University said that sporting activities were as important as the educational curriculum to maintain the physical and mental health of students.

He said Hamdard University takes great pride in following the footsteps and ideology of its founder and first Chancellor Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said who dedicated his life to providing health and education opportunities to the younger generations of Pakistan.

He congratulated the winning team and wished the best of luck to other universities in future events. He also congratulated the management of this tournament for the successful completion of the event. HEC annually organizes sporting events in collaboration with different universities from the month of October till June.
