DUBAI: Virat Kohli reached a huge milestone as he became the first Indian batsman to notch up 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket.
Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, achieved the feat during a clash against Mumbai Indians on Sunday in Dubai. Kohli, who opened the innings alongside Devdutt Padikkal reached his individual score of 16 in the fourth over.
The 32-year-old is the second man after West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle to reach the landmark in both T20 and one-day international cricket. Chris Gayle (14,275), Kieron Pollard (11,195), Shoaib Malik (10,808), and David Warner (10,019) are the only other four batsmen who have reached the mark in in the shortest format.
Kohli has a total of 10,038 runs from 314 games at an average of 41.65 in T20s, with 3,159 of those coming while playing for India. He has scored five hundreds in the format, all for RCB.
The RCB captain got to the mark after pulling Jasprit Bumrah for six in his knock of 51 from 42 balls. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl against RCB. Both the teams have lost their two games so far in the IPL 2021 second phase which is being played in the UAE.
Kohli is not only the highest run scorer in the history of the Indian Premier League but he also leads the run charts in international T20 cricket. Kohli has scored 3159 runs in 84 innings for the Indian team while playing T20 cricket.
