KOHAT: The Kohat police foiled an attempt of smuggling arms from Dara Adamkhel to Waziristanhere on Wednesday.
According to details, a smuggler from Afghanistan was arrested along with a vehicle loaded with foreign weapons during an operation on the Indus Highway.
According to sources, the intelligence-led operation recovered wireless base sets, night vision binoculars and grenade launchers, 30 Kalashnikovs, two LMG guns, one rifle, two pistols and 30 chargers.
Sources said foreign-made weapons and other paraphernalia were being smuggled from Dara Adamkhel to Waziristan. A case was registered against the arrested accused Qari Sabitullah at Muhammad Riaz Shaheed police station.
The police claimed that during preliminary investigations the accused revealed that several groups hailing from tribal areas were involved in smuggling of arms and ammunition.
Citing the initial investigation, DPO Javed Iqbal, said: “The accused has confessed to smuggling, which is expected to lead to significant revelations about the smugglers’ network”.
On 26 June, the police had foiled an attempt of smuggling weapons to down country and arrested a smuggler at Muslimabad police check post.
According to details, the police officials were checking vehicles at the Muslimabad check post when they stopped a vehicle for checking. Weapons concealed in secret cavities of the vehicle were recovered.
Police officials informed that the smuggler, named Hayat Khan, was carrying Five Kalashnikovs, 17 pistols with more than 6,500 bullets. A case of weapons smuggling was registered against him.
Police officials further informed that they have been searching for an organized group for a long time, which smuggles illegal ammunition, and finally they have detained one of its members.
