Pakistani-American fashion designer Khadijah Shah has announced her decision to relinquish her U.S. citizenship to accept a reserved seat in Pakistan’s National Assembly offered by Imran Khan, the jailed former Prime Minister. Pakistani law prohibits dual nationals from serving as members of parliament.
Shah, who faced charges of rioting and vandalism in May 2023 and was imprisoned under harsh conditions, was released on bail in December 2023 after a court ruling.
In a recent Instagram post, Shah detailed her decision to accept Khan’s offer and explained her temporary nomination of Mehrunnisa Sajjad to occupy her parliamentary slot until her citizenship issue is resolved. Shah wrote, “Relinquishing my U.S. citizenship, which represents freedom, safety, and opportunity, was a difficult choice. However, Pakistan is my motherland and the place where I’ve built my life. I cannot abandon it or my people.”
Reflecting on her recent struggles, Shah added, “The injustices I’ve endured have given me a renewed sense of purpose. I aim to make a positive impact for Pakistan.”
She expressed her honor at being considered by Imran Khan, stating, “I accepted his offer to represent PTI and hope to fulfill his expectations and those of my fellow citizens.”
Shah has nominated Mehrunnisa Sajjad, an Oxford University graduate and barrister known for her advocacy work, to temporarily take her place. Shah emphasized Sajjad’s dedication to fighting for marginalized communities and her commitment to genuine democracy and progress in Pakistan.
Shah concluded, “I am proud to nominate such a remarkable Pakistani woman to represent PTI and myself in parliament. We are dedicated to making a meaningful impact together. Insha’Allah.”
