K-Electric (KE), in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, is intensifying its efforts to combat electricity theft and address defaulters.
Recently, the utility carried out operations in Baldia IBC areas, including Iqbal Road, Delhi Colony, Mujahid Colony, and Turk Colony, where over 301 illegal connections (kundas), weighing a total of 480 kilograms, were removed from its infrastructure.
In 2023, K-Electric conducted approximately 4,500 kunda removal drives in the Baldia cluster, successfully eliminating over 30,000 illegal connections, amounting to around 60,000 kilograms of unauthorized wiring.
Illegal connections not only breach safety standards but also damage K-Electric’s infrastructure and pose significant risks to public safety. These operations aim to reduce losses from electricity theft and promote safer, more reliable communities by eliminating such hazards.
Currently, 70% of K-Electric’s network operates without loadshedding. However, theft and unpaid bills continue to influence loadshedding durations in certain areas. Regions with lower losses experience minimal or no loadshedding, showcasing the importance of responsible electricity usage and timely bill payments.
In 2024, K-Electric escalated its anti-theft campaign, conducting around 25,000 kunda removal drives across Karachi. These efforts led to the removal of over 250,000 illegal connections, equivalent to nearly 350,000 kilograms of unauthorized wiring.
