The administration under the control of the Lieutenant Governor imposed by Narendra Modi denied Kashmiri Muslims permission to offer Eid-ul-Adha prayers at Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid and Eidgah in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a report by the Kashmir Media Service, the administration, acting on the orders of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, prohibited Eid prayers at both significant sites.
Eid Mubarak! Yet again, Kashmir wakes up to the sad reality: no Eid prayers at Eidgah, and Jama Masjid locked down — for the 7th straight year. I too have been detained at my home.
In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are deprived of their fundamental right to pray — even on… pic.twitter.com/DFM1y0t9ce— Mirwaiz Umar Farooq (@MirwaizKashmir) June 7, 2025
It is noteworthy that since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, Muslims have consistently been prevented from holding Eid prayers at these locations.
Senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed strong anger over the move in a message on platform ‘X’, saying, “It is deeply saddening that there are no Eid prayers at Eidgah, the Jamia Masjid is sealed, and this has been happening continuously for the past seven years. I have also been placed under house arrest.”
He further remarked, “In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are being deprived of performing an important religious obligation. It is a matter of shame for those who rule over us.”
Meanwhile, the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid also expressed deep regret over the administration’s decision, calling it a blatant interference in religious affairs.
