Many parts of Karachi continued to face water shortages as the electricity supply to a pumping house at the Dhabeji pumping station remained suspended for fourth day.
ON Friday, a major power breakdown occurred at the Dhabeji Pumping Station which disrupted water supply infrastructure of the mega city.
The city is facing a water shortage of over 350 million gallons per day as the port city is only receiving about 650 million gallons of water. It should be noted that Karachi’s daily requirement is around 1,250 million gallons.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said that two feeders of a pumping house at the Dhabeji pumping station, known as the K-3 pumping house, have been shut down for the past 96 hours.
K-Electric has linked the power outage to an underground cable fault, and said that accumulated rainwater is hindering the repair work, and power will be restored after the water drains.
The water board spokesperson said that the fault occurred at 10 pm on June 26 and has not been repaired yet, which resulted in shutting down of the two main water pumps of the K-3 pumping house.
He said that the shutdown has led to a shortage of more than 350 million gallons of water per day, and some parts of East and Central districts, such as Nazimabad, New Karachi, Landhi and Korangi, are facing severe water shortage.
He added that 70 million gallons of water was supplied to the city from the K-3 pumping house daily, which is now completely shut down. However, 70 million gallons of water is currently being supplied from the K-2 pumping house located at the Dhabeji pumping station.
