KARACHI: The Met Office has forecast more rain in the port city today. This comes after heavy rain inundated Pakistan’s economic hub last night, leading to flooded roads and heightened concerns about the city’s preparedness for such weather events.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a statement indicating that the weather will remain cloudy throughout the day. The morning temperature in the city recorded at 19.9 degrees Celsius adds to the cool and damp atmosphere.
Data released by the Met Office highlights varying amounts of rainfall in different areas. Korangi Area received the highest recorded rainfall at 77mm, followed by PAF Faisal Base with 75mm, Malir with 64mm, Surjani Town with 63.8mm, Keamari with 55mm, Quaidabad with 52mm, and the old airport area with 51mm. Other affected areas include Gulshan-i-Hadeed (50mm), PAF Masroor Base (47.2mm), Jinnah Terminal (42mm), Saadi Town (37.6mm), North Karachi (33.6mm), University Road (30mm), Gulshan-i-Maymar (23.8mm), and Nazimabad (23.5mm).
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, in an early morning post on social media platform X, highlighted persisting challenges in certain areas. The old city area, secretariat area, Tower, and MA Jinnah Road still faced waterlogging due to specific chokepoints, despite ongoing efforts.
The government has mobilized machinery to clear disposal areas, particularly in Hijrat Colony. However, Mayor Wahab acknowledged that additional work is required to address the situation in the morning. As the city grapples with the aftermath of the previous night’s rain, concerns linger about the effectiveness of drainage systems and the overall resilience of Karachi in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
