In an effort to curb water wastage, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Council has approved a fine of Rs10,000 for individuals found using tap water to wash vehicles in public areas, including streets, alleys, and commercial zones.
The initiative, proposed by Mayor Murtaza Wahab during a recent council session, aims to discourage the irresponsible use of the city’s limited water resources. According to the plan, fines will be issued based on complaints lodged by Union Council (UC) chairpersons, and the revenue collected will be reinvested into the respective UCs to support local development.
During the meeting, PPP councilor Najmi Alam highlighted the frequent misuse of municipal water in areas such as Do Talwar, where residents regularly wash vehicles, causing water to flood the streets. He emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and regular oversight.
However, the proposal drew criticism from opposition leader Saifuddin Advocate, who accused the mayor of neglecting the city’s immediate water crisis in favor of long-term planning.
He pointed to the escalating cost of the K-IV water supply project, which has surged from Rs20 billion to Rs200 billion, and alleged deliberate damage to water pipelines. He also announced plans by opposition parties to organize public demonstrations in protest.
