A Karachi court has sentenced a man named Zaeem Imran to life in prison after finding him guilty of blasphemy against the Holy Quran.
The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Wasiti Zabihah Khatak in Karachi. The prosecution, led by Prosecutor Hina Naz, argued that Imran’s wife had filed a case against him. She alleged that Imran had objected to her constant use of a mobile phone and accused her of wrongdoing. The court ruled that Imran violated Section 295-B of the law by committing the blasphemy offense.
Imran reportedly demanded that his wife swear on the Quran to prove her innocence regarding her alleged contact with someone else. Despite her clarification, Imran, in a fit of anger, set fire to the Holy Quran. This led to the filing of a complaint against him by his wife, who later announced her intention to seek a divorce.
The court emphasized that Imran’s actions had deeply offended societal sentiments, and he failed to substantiate his claims in his defense. Imran also failed to identify anyone else responsible for disrespecting the Holy Quran. In his defense, Imran claimed that his wife was engaged in an illicit relationship with another person.
