ABBOTTABAD – A man and woman from Karachi have been arrested by Abbottabad Police for allegedly distributing counterfeit currency to local traders while posing as tourists. Authorities recovered fake notes worth Rs 136,000 during the arrest.
The operation was launched on the directives of District Police Officer (DPO) Umar Tufail as part of a broader crackdown on criminal elements in tourist hotspots.
The raid was led by Changla Gali SHO Zubair Khan, following complaints from local shopkeepers.
The arrested individuals were identified as Abrar, son of Shaukat Ali, and his wife. Police said the couple had been purchasing items from various traders using a mix of genuine and fake currency notes, deliberately creating confusion during transactions.
According to reports, the woman would distract shopkeepers while the man discreetly handed over counterfeit bills.
A formal case has been registered under Sections 489B and 489C of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertain to the use and possession of counterfeit currency. Police confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
Local business owners have reported a rise in similar incidents during the peak tourist season.
In response, the merchant community has resolved to carefully verify cash payments from tourists and immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
