A powerful monsoon system began affecting Sindh last night, bringing moderate to heavy rain to Karachi today. Heavy rain is also forecast for the port city on Tuesday.
The Met Office has reported that Karachi is expected to experience heavy to moderate downpours due to the strong monsoon winds that arrived in Sindh last night. The showers may be accompanied by lightning and thunder.
Weather experts note that a low-pressure system in central India is moving toward the coastal state of Gujarat. This system is expected to bring rain to Sindh’s Tharparkar, Umarkot, Mithi, and surrounding areas.
In Karachi, steady rain is forecast from Monday evening through Tuesday evening. The meteorological service predicts the city could receive 30-50 millimeters of rain, with isolated heavier showers possible. The rain may continue through Thursday, August 1.
On Friday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued directives to relevant departments to take precautions to mitigate potential flooding and extreme weather effects. Monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are penetrating the upper parts of the country.
Under the influence of this system, the NDMA warned that rainfall could trigger landslides, mudslides, or falling boulders, potentially disrupting roads in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Meanwhile, isolated heavy showers are expected in various cities across Sindh and Balochistan from July 29 to July 31.
