As Karachi enters another scorching week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warns residents of an impending heatwave with temperatures poised to soar to 40 degrees Celsius today. Monday already saw the mercury rise to 36°C, setting the stage for what promises to be a blistering day ahead.
With the city under the sway of continental air from the western region, current wind speeds clock in at 14km per hour, accompanied by humidity levels hovering around 67%. As the day progresses, the ‘feels like’ temperature, as projected by the Met department, is expected to peak at a sweltering 42°C.
Weather analysts foresee a persistent heatwave gripping Karachi throughout the week, with temperatures fluctuating between 35°C and 37°C, and potentially spiking to 40°C by the weekend. Expect light west to southwest winds, coupled with humidity ranging from 40% to 50% during daylight hours, escalating to 80% during the night.
Residents are advised to brace themselves for sustained high temperatures, with minor fluctuations, until the anticipated arrival of monsoon rains. Across the country, prevailing continental air dominates the weather scene, promising dry conditions in most regions. However, isolated areas in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) may witness partly cloudy skies with sporadic light rain or thunderstorms.
As Tuesday unfolds, plain areas can anticipate a gradual increase in daytime temperatures, mirroring the trend witnessed on Monday. Notably, Sindh bears the brunt of the heat, with Jacobabad registering a scorching 46°C, while Mohenjo Daro and Dadu follow closely behind at 45°C.
Karachiites are urged to take necessary precautions to combat the heatwave, including staying hydrated, seeking shade, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours.
