SUKKUR: Senior journalist Jan Muhammad Mahar was shot dead by armed men in Sukkur.
Mahar was associated with a Sindhi newspaper and its private TV channel. He was shot dead by unidentified armed men riding a motorcycle near St. Saviour School on Queens Road on Sunday evening after leaving his office.
Local Police said the assailants shot several fires on Mahar who was travelling by his car. He received several bullets to his head and near his eyes.
He was taken to Civil Hospital and later rushed to a private hospital in a serious condition. However, he succumbed to his wounds while surgery was being performed.
The motive behind the attack could not be ascertained immediately. Police said that an old enmity could be the reason for the murder which will be investigated.
Inspector-General Police Sindh police took notice of the attack and instructed DIG Javed Sonharo Jiskani to promptly apprehend the attackers.
DIG Sukkur and SSP Singhar Malik arrived at the hospital. SSP Sukkur, speaking to the media, said the attack on Mahar could be the result of an enmity in his hometown of Chak in Shikarpur district.
A large number of media personnel had gathered at the hospital after receiving reports about the incident. They said the entire local journalist community was shocked over the assassination of Mahar.
