Let’s face it: a Pirates of the Caribbean movie just wouldn’t be the same without Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp has been the heart and soul of the franchise. However, it’s been eight long years since he last embodied the iconic pirate due to personal controversies and legal battles with his ex-wife.
According to Geoffrey Rush, who portrayed Captain Barbossa, there’s hope for Depp’s return to his legendary role. Rush has disclosed that conversations have already taken place. He admitted to Movie Web that he had discussions with Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer about reviving his character and Depp’s.
Reflecting on his over-a-decade-long journey in the franchise, Rush confessed that he initially hesitated at the thought of bringing Barbossa back after his heroic sacrifice for his child, fearing it might diminish the emotional impact. However, the possibility of Depp’s return changed his mind.

Rush shared that he has spoken with Bruckheimer about how both Barbossa and Captain Jack could make a comeback. He suggested that Barbossa could return as a ghost, akin to the apparition of Hamlet’s father. This idea would not only infuse the story with dramatic elements but also provide opportunities for comedic moments, as Barbossa could amusingly haunt and irritate Jack Sparrow.

Rush explained that this narrative twist would add an entertaining layer to the plot, considering Barbossa’s wealth and power after breaking the curse and acquiring Aztec gold. He believes that this ghostly return would serve as a fitting conclusion to Barbossa’s journey, allowing him to once again challenge Jack Sparrow with his characteristic swagger and arrogance.
