The Jamaat-i-Islami on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking general elections in the country within 90 days after the dissolution of National Assembly.
The constitutional petition was filed by JI Naib Amir Liaquat Baloch through his lawyer.
The petition urged the court to order ECP to make sure that general elections were held in the nation within 90 days.
It is important to note that this is the third petition that has been submitted to the Supreme Court. The same plea had previously been submitted to the Supreme Court by Abid S. Zubairi, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to the PTI petition, the Supreme Court should also order the ECP to publish the general elections schedule.
The top court was urged to declare the CCI decision regarding the delimitation and the census 2023 null and void.
Earlier, Sirajul Haq warned that his party would not tolerate even a single day’s delay in the elections beyond the constitutional 90-day period required to organise the polls following the dissolution of assemblies.
JI will approach the Supreme Court to ensure the timely execution of the national polls, he said while talking to media after addressing a condolence reference for JI Bangladesh vice-emir Dilawar Hussain Saeedi at Mansoorah on Saturday.
He emphasised the caretaker government’s foremost responsibility to collaborate closely with the Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure free and fair elections. Additionally, he urged the caretaker government to reverse the recent hikes in electricity tariff and petrol prices.
