Harvey Weinstein, a former American film producer, has been diagnosed with cancer, which is the latest in a series of health-related news about him this fall.
He has chronic myeloid leukemia, a rare type of cancer that affects the bone marrow, according to a report by NBC News. Weinstein is currently receiving treatment while serving time in prison at Rikers Island in New York.
Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s legal healthcare representative in New York State, did not provide any additional comments but expressed deep concern about the speculation surrounding Weinstein’s medical condition.
The news of Weinstein’s diagnosis comes after he underwent emergency heart surgery last month. He also tested positive for COVID-19 and double pneumonia in July. Weinstein is being held at Rikers Island as he awaits a retrial scheduled for November. This follows the overturning of his 2020 rape conviction in New York, which resulted in a 23-year prison sentence, in April of this year. Additionally, he was indicted on new sexual assault charges last month, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He now faces charges from two separate indictments related to three sex crimes and is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
Weinstein did not appear in court when the indictment details were revealed, as he had not received medical clearance. However, he did appear in a wheelchair to enter his plea of “not guilty.”
