Israel has claimed the killing of senior Hamas leader and founding member Mohammad Issa Al-Issa in a targeted operation, international media reported on Sunday. Al-Issa was reportedly the mastermind behind the October 7 attack on Israel.
According to a statement issued by the Israeli military, Al-Issa was killed in an airstrike in the Sabra neighborhood.
“Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa was a key source of knowledge and one of the last remaining senior Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip who held high-ranking positions before October 7th, 2023,” the IDF said. In its statement, the Israeli military described Al-Issa as a senior figure in the militant group’s military wing.
Arab media reports identified Al-Issa as the head of the support headquarters for Hamas’s military wing, playing a significant operational role in planning and logistics.
In a separate development, the Israeli military also claimed responsibility for an airstrike in Lebanon that killed a senior Hezbollah commander. The commander, identified as Abbas Al-Hassan Wahbi, was reportedly the intelligence chief of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force Battalion.
Hamas has yet to react to the Israeli claim.
