LAHORE: An application has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan seeking suo moto action and setting up a judicial commission against the Islamia University Bahawalpur scandal.
This application has been filed by Mudassar Chaudhry Advocate in the Lahore Registry of the apex court after a scandal of drug trade and sexual harassment on campus was revealed and grown out of proportion.
The petition said the role of the Islamia University scandal is a disgrace to society. It said the network involved negative activities in the university in destroying the future of the young generation. The future of the young generation cannot be secured without exposing this network and its leaders, it added.
The petitioner urged the court to take notice of the incident and order the formation of a judicial commission to probe the incident at the university.
It said that through the formation of the judicial inquiry, the accused should be exposed and given the harshest punishment. It added that the judicial inquiry should make recommendations to secure the future of educational institutions and students.
Earlier Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi has taken notice of the incidents of the possession and sale of drugs in the university.
The chief minister has formed a 3-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The committee includes Secretary Minerals Babar Aman, DIG Amin Bukhari and DIG Raja Faisal.
The committee will investigate the incident from all aspects and determine the persons involved in the scandal. The committee will submit its report to the chief minister at the earliest.
Police have also formed a 5-member special investigation team to probe the incidents of drug abuse on the premises of the university.
RPO Bahawalpur Rai Babar Saeed formed a 5-member special investigation team to probe reports of widespread use of drugs on campus. The committee comprises of SP Investigation, DSP Crime, DSP Legal Team and the SHO of the concerned police station and the investigation officer have been made a part of the team.
The purpose of setting up the investigation team is to conduct a transparent investigation, while the SP Investigation has been directed to submit the report.
It should be noted that a drug scandal has come to light in Islamia University Bahawalpur. It was also revealed that 5000 indecent videos were also recovered from the mobile phone of the arrested chief security officer Ijaz Shah.
The scandal was unveiled when the security officer Ijaz was detained during a search after police found him possessing drugs Finance Director Abu Bakar and Transport In-charge Muhammad Altaf were taken into custody.
A case was registered at the Baghdad-ul-Jadid Police Station stating that eight grams of ice [crystal methamphetamine] was found in the possession of Muhammad Altaf. The complaint was registered under the Control of Narcotics Substance Act.
Police investigation claimed that 400 obscene videos and images were found in the investigation process. A forensic examination was conducted and officials have sent the report to the interim chief minister of Punjab.
