Federal Minister for Defense and Security Khawaja Asif has suggested the possibility of launching cross-border attacks against militants in Afghanistan during an interview with a foreign news outlet.
Dismissing any possibility of talks with TTP, Asif told Voice of America “What is there to discuss with TTP? If there is common ground, then dialogue is possible.” He also affirmed that cross-border strikes could be considered if necessary.
The Defense Minister drew sharp criticism from the opposition parties on Friday. They denounced his remarks as “irresponsible” and demanded an apology, arguing that such rhetoric is inflammatory and jeopardizes the fragile peace and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“Khawaja Asif’s statement has the potential to escalate tensions and spark a wave of terrorism, reversing efforts toward regional stability and peace,” said Omar Ayub Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
The opposition leaders, including PTI’s former NA speaker Asad Qaiser and members of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), convened in the Opposition Lobby in the National Assembly on Friday, along with representatives from ex-FATA and PATA.
It is worth mentioning that Pakistani officials have long blamed the TTP for a rise in militant violence, including deadly suicide bombings targeting Chinese nationals working on various energy and infrastructure projects. They assert that the TTP’s leadership is based in Afghanistan and is being supported by the Taliban government, a claim the Kabul administration denies.
