People are often captivated by true stories, even as fiction evolves over time. While many films are based on real events, they typically only become controversial when they address sensitive issues like racism.
Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel “It Ends with Us” is making its much-anticipated big-screen debut. Directed by Justin Baldoni, who also stars in the film, and adapted by Christy Hall, the movie follows Lily Bloom, a woman who endures a traumatic childhood and a strained relationship with her parents due to their dysfunctional marriage. Lily falls in love with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, but their relationship faces challenges when she discovers a troubling side to him.
The film adaptation remains true to the novel’s core story but alters the characters’ ages. In the book, Lily and Ryle are 23 and 30, respectively, while the film portrays them as older.
Is it based on a true story?
Colleen Hoover has said that while “It Ends with Us” reflects themes close to her heart, it is not a true story. She shared with Today that the novel’s love triangle resembles her own family’s experiences.
Hoover explained, “My mother and father divorced when I was two, and my earliest memory is him throwing a TV at her. We lived in an abusive household until my mother managed to leave that relationship. After that, I remember growing up with a strong and independent mother.”
She continued, “I often wondered how she ended up in that situation, which inspired me to write this book about her courage to leave my biological father.”
“It Ends with Us” is a reflection of Hoover’s personal experiences, and she has fond memories of her life since then.
