Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has released into theaters today with the dubious honour of being the final film in the DC Extended Universe.
The original Aquaman (2018), starring Jason Momoa in the title role, became a phenomenon in China, opening to $93 million and eventually totaling $291.8 million. The film still stands as the highest-grossing DC movie of all time, with $1.148 billion at the global box office.
Is Aquaman 2 the final DCEU movie?
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the final film in the DC Extended Universe, which means its final scene its credits scene is the final shot of Warner Bros.
The Lost Kingdom, which reunites Momoa’s hero with Patrick Wilson’s Orm Marius and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, is the final film taking place in the DCEU that began a decade ago with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013). After Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, executives James Gunn and Peter Safran will launch their own universe, beginning with Superman: Legacy, which is dated for July 2025.
Will there be an Aquaman 3?
The threequel is not confirmed yet. Warner Bros. is in the middle of transitioning between what was the DCEU and what will become the DCU, meaning little care has been placed on the 2023 releases belonging to the former franchise.
If Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom does spawn a sequel, there are a number of cast members from the second film who could return. Naturally, Jason Momoa would return as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, likely alongside Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna. Amber Heard could return as Mera, though this is unlikely given the aftermath of her trial with Johnny Depp and the noticeably reduced role she received in Aquaman 2 as a result.
