The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has named Iran’s current ambassador to Pakistan and two other Iranian intelligence officers in connection with the 2007 abduction of retired FBI agent Robert A “Bob” Levinson from Kish Island in Iran, the US federal agency said in a statement.
The FBI’s Washington Field Office has identified three Iranian intelligence officers—Reza Amiri Moghadam, Taghi Daneshvar, and Gholamhossein Mohammadnia—as key figures in the abduction of former FBI agent Robert Levinson and subsequent efforts to conceal the Iranian government’s involvement.
“These three intelligence officers were among those who allegedly facilitated Bob’s 2007 abduction and the subsequent cover-up by the Iranian government,” said Steven Jensen, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “Bob likely later perished in captivity, far from his family, friends, and colleagues.”
Jensen emphasized the agency’s commitment to accountability: “The FBI will continue its relentless pursuit to hold anyone involved in his abduction to account for their reprehensible actions.”
According to the FBI, Reza Amiri Moghadam—also known as Ahmad Amirinia—was heading the operations unit of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) at the time of Levinson’s disappearance. European-based MOIS operatives were reportedly under his command and relayed information directly to him in Tehran.
The FBI also stated that Iranian authorities made deliberate attempts to misdirect responsibility for the kidnapping by attributing it to a militant group based in Pakistan’s Balochistan region.
