New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been postponed for an indefinite period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made no official announcement for the extension of the IPL 2020 yet. The biggest T20 tournament, which was scheduled to start on 29th March, was initially suspended until 15th April.
According to details, all eight IPL teams were informed about the new postponement. Reportedly, the BCCI may aim for a tournament in September-October.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly earlier sought to dismay hopes of a quick resumption of sport. With the global shutdown preventing players from travelling and Indian restrictions ruling out new visas, the tournament cannot be held in the coming weeks.
It is pertinent to remember that the coronavirus pandemic has already forced major sporting events either to be cancelled or postponed.
Euro 2020 and Copa America, the quadrennial championships, two of the most important events on the sport’s calendar, were scheduled for this summer but will now be moved to 2021 because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The International Olympic Committee postponed the Tokyo Games till 2021 because of the novel coronavirus. In a recent blow, Tour de France, the world’s biggest annual bicycle racing event was also postponed.
