A financially distressed man took his own life by hanging from a ceiling fan due to an inability to pay a hefty electricity bill in the Dhok Sadu area of Taxila.
The deceased, identified as Malik Tahir, had recently engaged in a heated argument with his siblings over the unpaid electricity bill, which escalated into a serious dispute. Tahir, a father of two, had been unemployed for the past four months, and the deadline for the bill payment had long passed, intensifying his stress.
Struggling with financial difficulties, Tahir committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The local police conducted a post-mortem at Tehsil Headquarters Hospital and later handed over the body to his family. Taxila police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.
The rising cost of electricity bills has become a severe financial burden for many in the middle class, sparking widespread public outcry over exorbitant power charges. Recently, an elderly woman from Gujranwala also took her life after receiving a Rs10,000 electricity bill.
