The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police used drone-jamming technology for the first time in the force’s history during Ashura processions on Sunday in Peshawar.
12 processions were carried out in Peshawar on Sunday amid tightened security. It is worth mentioning that thousands of security personnel were deployed for the safety of the mourners.
Peshawar’s Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qasim Khan revealed that the city police had used drone jamming technology for the first time. CCPO Qasim Khan explained that a drone-jamming gun was used during the main Ashura procession. The drone-jamming system monitors aerial drone activity and enables the disruption of drone cameras.
He further noted that drones had previously been used by militants in the southern districts. With this new technology, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police can now jam suspicious drones, with the system capable of disabling them within a range of up to three kilometers.
It is worth mentioning that last month the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police also decided to procure thermal drones. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hameed, stated that thermal drones would enhance nighttime operational capabilities.
IGP Zulfiqar Hameed reported that drones have been used by militants in the merged tribal and southern districts, noting that the global use of drones is increasing. He expressed concern that the use of drones by terrorist groups may escalate, emphasizing that the police require drone technology for monitoring across all districts.
