Imran slams PM, says ‘merit’ should determine COAS appointment

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Friday reiterated that the appointment of the next chief of army staff (COAS) must be made on merit, while lashing out at PM Shehbaz Sharif, saying that the premier had flown to London to meet a “lying absconder”.

“The premier is going to meet the same person who was convicted by the apex court,” Imran said while addressing the long march via video link.

He added that PM Shehbaz was brought into power through a conspiracy.

Former premier Imran Khan has said that the appointment of the next chief of army staff (COAS) must be made according to merit. However, he said that those in power had not done anything on merit and questioned if they would rightfully select the army chief on merit.

“They want their own army chief because they want to steal.”

PTI chief Imran Khan said that the “thieves” had come into power because of their “handlers”.

“There is murder of morality in this country,” he said, adding that such things don’t occur in civilized countries.

“These thieves have only one other achievement apart from their corruption, they managed to slowly finish their cases,” he said, adding that they had wreaked havoc in the country.

He went on to say that a country is unable to prosper when it forgets its morals.

“Prosperous countries have strong institutions. What they are doing in London is dramatics,” he said, claiming that Nawaz Sharif had never looked at merit when making appointments.

The former premier claimed that Pakistani expatriates in England and US were supporting his movement because they have seen the prevalence of law in progressive societies.

“Restoration of law and order is essential for the wellbeing of Pakistan,” he stressed.

Moving on to the issue of registration of FIR over the firing incident on him last week, Imran blamed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former premier Nawaz Sharif for selling Punjab police seats in the 1990s.

“If Punjab police is not working correctly, then Nawaz and Shehbaz are to blame,” he said.

“I can’t get a first information report registered as an ex-prime minister because a powerful person is in it,” he said.

PTI chief Imran Khan has called on the nation to participate in the party’s long march for future generations.

‘Attacker was a trained shooter, not religious fanatic’, claims Imran

Moreover, PTI chairman claimed that the attacker who tried to assassinate him in the Wazirabad attack was a “trained shooter” and not a “religious fanatic” during an interview with German broadcaster.

“He was not a religious fanatic, this was a trained shooter,” Imran claimed in an interview with German International broadcaster DW on Thursday. Imran also claimed that his assailant’s profile was already drawn up and did not match that of a religious fanatic. The PTI chief also reiterated his claim that there were two shooters, saying that it was “confirmed” that one person was opening fire from the front with “different bullets”.

He repeated his allegation that the government was behind the attack, claiming that he had already known about the plot and that it was concocted two months ago.

“Killing is not new for them. As for the military intelligence guy, they were in cahoots,” he added. The PTI chairman said the “intelligence guy” was known for and had a background of “bumping off people”.

Imran also claimed that he would be able to provide all the circumstantial evidence for his claims to an investigation. “Whenever there is an independent investigation, these three will be [found] involved,” he added.
