KARACHI: The State Department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has demolished 40 shops, illegally constructed by land mafia, in Liaquatabad Supermarket, and sealed the office.
According to details, almost 40 illegal shops were built in the vacant office of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) situated in the building. The office was vacated because the building was declared unfit for use due to its dilapidated condition.
Sources have revealed that the illegal shops were allegedly built by the Deputy Director, Assistant Director and Inspectors of the State Department. Sources further claimed that the mafia was expected to earn up to Rs 1 million per shop and had allegedly started booking.
On the directives of Karachi Administrator Iftikhar Shalawani, KMC State Department took action against illegal constructions in Liaquatabad Supermarket and demolished illegally constructed shops. However, the authorities have not taken any action against the allegedly involved officers.
Earlier in September, it was revealed that many illegal shops were set up in the upper part of the building under the nose of the authorities.
Two large warehouse-like compounds were also constructed on the rooftops of shops in the upper part of the Liaquatabad Supermarket last year, which were later demolished on the orders of municipal commissioner Syed Saifur Rehman.
