LAHORE: Punjab Police Inspector General (IG) Usman Anwar has met the constable who went viral in an expletive-laden video on social media.
The police chief said such policemen should not be ridiculed but require help.
Earlier IG Punjab Usman Anwar said the police constable was suffering from a mental illness and was receiving treatment.
The police constable was recorded abusing and beating a reporter on a busy road in Lahore after he was questioned over a traffic violation.
The policemen also hurled profanities at the Punjab Police IG when the reporter addressed the provincial police chief to take notice of the actions.
In response, the police chief said clarified that the constable is undergoing treatment to recover from his mental condition.
He said the police are conducting screening and treatment of 200,000 employees of the police force against 10 diseases will be completed soon.
He said most of the police officers and personnel are suffering anxiety due to psychological profiling. He said the purpose of this screening is to identify employees suffering from psychological diseases and provide them with treatment and counseling.
IG Anwar said the purpose of psychological screening is not to harm or fire an employee. He said police employees suffering from psychological disorders will be referred to relevant doctors.
