Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will host the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual Conference from July 19 to 22, where a key agenda item will be the decision on whether Pakistan will host the Champions Trophy in 2025.
This conference is significant as it marks the first time this prestigious event is held in the Asian region.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is anticipated to express concerns about the 2025 Champions Trophy being held in Pakistan. India’s hesitance to participate, citing security issues, has prompted the ICC to explore alternative options. Discussions in Colombo may touch on the necessity for government approvals and the potential for a co-hosting arrangement with the UAE.
There are apprehensions that India could withdraw unexpectedly, prompting the ICC to prepare contingency plans, including budget considerations for alternate host nations alongside Pakistan.
The conference will convene over 220 delegates from 108 ICC member countries, representing regions such as Africa, the Americas, Asia, East Asia Pacific, and Europe. This annual gathering serves as a crucial platform for cricket administrators and stakeholders to discuss the sport’s strategic direction, governance, and development.
