Ali Raza, the husband of Sania Zehra, a 20-year-old pregnant mother of two whose body was found hanging in her home near Kumharanwala Chowk, New Multan on July 9, has been arrested by the police.
Following an investigation, Ali Raza was taken into custody and subsequently transported to an undisclosed location for further questioning.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif took notice of the tragic incident on July 13, where Sania allegedly met a brutal fate at the hands of her husband, Ali Raza. Sania’s body was initially discovered hanging from a fan at her in-laws’ house, prompting the chief minister to request a detailed report from the Multan city police officer. Her body was later exhumed on court orders, and medical samples were sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis.
Dr. Munazzah, responsible for women’s anti-violence initiatives, confirmed that the Punjab government exhumed Sania Zehra’s body to gather forensic evidence. A case was filed against her husband and his family following a complaint from Sania’s father, Asad Abbas. The suspect had been evading arrest.
“My daughter was killed at night and hanged in the morning to make it appear as suicide,” Abbas claimed. “The scene was staged by the police. I appeal to the Punjab government and the district administration for justice, now that the post-mortem is complete. My daughter was tortured and hanged; I demand justice.”
The exhumation was conducted under magistrate supervision, and the forensic samples were sent to Lahore for analysis. The New Multan police station has assured the public that additional suspects will be apprehended soon.
