The prominent crocodile, Burt, known for his role in the acclaimed Australian comedy Crocodile Dundee, has passed away.
The news was shared on social media by Crocosaurus Cove, an aquarium and exhibition facility located in Darwin, Australia, where Burt resided. The announcement stated that the crocodile “passed away peacefully” and was “estimated to be over 90 years old.”
Burt, a saltwater crocodile, measured 5.1 meters (16 feet 8 inches) in length and weighed 700 kilograms (110 stone). He had been a resident of Crocosaurus Cove since 2008.
Named in honor of the film star Burt Reynolds, he was captured from the Reynolds River in 1980 and later discovered by filmmakers at a crocodile farm, as noted by Crocosaurus Cove’s chief executive, Penny Priest.
In Crocodile Dundee, Burt appears in a memorable scene where American journalist Sue Charlton, portrayed by Linda Kozlowski, is saved by Mick Dundee, played by Paul Hogan, from a crocodile attack. Although much of the sequence utilized models, Priest remarked, “The scene … was actually filmed using the motions of Burt and him launching out of the water.”
