Fancy a cheeseburger this Monday and looking for some excuse? Look no further. The 18th of September is National Cheeseburger Day. And there is no shortage of culinary options to round out the day.
If you want to get really specific about the origins of this all-American burger, you can go back to about 12,000 years ago, when people started growing wheat in the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East (what with wheat being a key ingredient in burger buns, and all), according to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
The more modern roots of the burger, like so many things, are fraught with debate, as The Spruce Eats points out. Some believe it was invented in 1924, when 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger slapped a slice of American cheese onto a burger at his family’s restaurant, the Rite Spot, in Pasadena, Calif.
So here’s a look at some of the specials on offer across the nation.
