With the beginning of the new Islamic year in Makkah Mukarramah, a new covering (Kiswa) was draped over the Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram. The changing of the Kiswa at the start of Muharram every year is an important religious tradition.
According to details, this sacred and spiritually uplifting ceremony of changing the Kiswa was carried out on the 1st of Muharram, 1447 Hijri. In the preparation of the new Kiswa, 68 Quranic verses were embroidered on 47 pieces of black silk using silver threads coated with 24-carat gold.
The total weight of the new Kiswa is approximately 1,415 kilograms. Earlier, on the 29th of Dhul-Hijjah after Asr prayer, the golden parts of the old Kiswa were carefully removed, according to Saudi officials.
The process of changing the Kiswa is completed every year at the beginning of the Islamic year with special reverence and devotion, and it is considered of great spiritual significance by Muslims around the world.
It is worth noting that the Kaaba in Makkah Mukarramah is the most sacred place of worship in the world, towards which Muslims across the globe face during their five daily prayers, and every year during Hajj and Umrah, Muslims in large numbers perform the circumambulation (Tawaf) of the Kaaba.
