Due to continuous heavy rain since last night, the district administration has announced a one-day local holiday for Rawalpindi.
Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi has issued a notification in this regard. The public is asked to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, according to the notification.
Torrential rains lashed Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Thursday, triggering a flood-like situation across both cities. Over 230mm of rainfall was recorded, prompting WASA to go on high alert.
In Rawalpindi, low-lying areas were flooded, and machinery was deployed to handle drainage, according to the WASA Managing Director. The water level in Nullah Lai rose further, hitting 20 feet at Katarian and 19 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge, nearing danger levels.
WASA officials confirmed that all available resources were being used for drainage and rescue operations.
Adiala Road’s surrounding areas, including several villages ahead of the road, went underwater. At Gorkhpur Bridge, the Soan River experienced flash flooding, cutting off access to nearly 20 villages.
The situation remains tense as further rainfall is expected, and emergency teams continue relief and evacuation efforts. Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid travelling unnecessarily.
According to the Met Office, the current rain spell will continue for two more days in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with intermittent showers expected throughout next week, starting Sunday evening.
