In the wake of a five-storey building collapse in Karachi’s Lyari, which claimed the lives of at least six people, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has released a list of unsafe and uninhabitable buildings across Karachi.
A total of 578 structures have been declared dangerous, with the highest number—456—located in District South.
According to the report, out of the 578 buildings declared hazardous in Karachi, District South is the most affected. The breakdown provided by SBCA shows 66 dangerous buildings in District Central, 23 in Keamari, 14 in Korangi, 13 in District East, 4 in Malir, and 2 in District West.
The agency has confirmed that the building that collapsed in Baghdadi had already been declared unsafe and notices to vacate it had been issued three times in the last two years, but it could not be implemented.
These revelations are a wake-up call for citizens and the authorities are being questioned as to whether timely action could have prevented the loss of precious lives.
The civic circles are demanding that the unsafe buildings be vacated immediately and alternative accommodation be provided to the affected families and strict action be taken against those responsible for negligence.
