The Election Reform Act 2024 has become a law after being signed by the President of Pakistan. The Act has been sent to the Senate Secretariat for gazette notification.
According to details, President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Election Reform Bill 2024, after which it has become a formal law. The President signed the bill last night. The Election Reform Act 2024, sent to the Senate Secretariat after the President’s signature, will be issued a gazette notification today.
After the National Assembly, the Election Reform Bill was also passed by the Senate with a majority vote. Opposition members in the National Assembly and Senate strongly protested against the passage of the bill. PTI leaders say that the government has attacked the Supreme Court through Parliament by passing the bill, meaning one institution is attacking another to crush a political party.
What is the Election Reform Act?
The amendment bill was introduced in Parliament after the Supreme Court’s decision on July 12, which ordered the Election Commission to give specific seats to PTI.
The first amendment to the Act states that no member of the assembly can change their party affiliation certificate. The second amendment states that any political party can submit its list in time to get specific seats.
The first amendment was introduced in Section 66 of the Election Act 2017, while the second was introduced in Section 104. Both amendments have been enforced immediately after being signed by the country’s constitutional head, President Asif Ali Zardari.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar has challenged the Election Reform Act 2024 in the Supreme Court, protesting against its passage.”
