Karachi is expected to experience its first monsoon spell of the season beginning Friday, with rain and thunderstorms forecast to persist through Sunday.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the wet conditions are being driven by a low-pressure system currently positioned over Indian Gujarat, which is influencing weather patterns across Sindh.
Meteorologist Anjum Nazir said that rain may begin by Friday evening, with the heaviest downpours likely to occur on Saturday. Continuous rainfall throughout Saturday could increase the risk of urban flooding in Karachi, while intermittent showers are forecast to continue into Sunday.
The weather system is also expected to affect other parts of Sindh, where similar urban flooding risks are anticipated due to heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, heavy monsoon showers lashed various areas on Thursday, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to declare a rain emergency. In response to persistent downpours and PMD warnings, WASA has deployed emergency response teams and heavy machinery to vulnerable locations, including Committee Chowk underpass and Murree Road.
Rainfall measurements recorded include 35mm in Bokra, 33mm in Pirwadhai, 31mm in Saidpur, and 23mm in Golra. The monsoon system has now spread across much of the country, raising concerns over flooding in several urban centers.
