A powerful monsoon system is set to impact Sindh, including Karachi, from August 26 to 29, bringing heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong low-pressure system has entered the Sindh
The PMD forecasts heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms throughout Sindh, with Karachi experiencing intermittent rain during this period. The Kirthar range and mountainous areas of Balochistan are also likely to receive substantial downpours.
Authorities have declared an emergency in Karachi due to the expected heavy rain. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has canceled all staff leaves, and Mayor Murtaza Wahab has instructed municipal services to remain on high alert. Additionally, fishermen are advised to avoid the sea from August 27 to 30 due to expected high tides.
The monsoon rains will also affect other regions. From August 26 to 29, Punjab will experience rainfall, with potential risks of urban flooding in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala. The risk of flash floods is elevated in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions, with heavy rains possibly causing flood surges in several cities, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, and Mirpurkhas.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain is forecasted for Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, and other districts. Isolated thundershowers may occur in Kohat, Orakzai, Hangu, and Kurram.
The PMD has issued alerts for southern and eastern Balochistan, where the low-pressure system is expected to bring strong winds and rainfall, potentially leading to flooding in low-lying areas. Repair work on link roads is underway in Sabi, Sohbatpur, Jaffarabad, Usta Muhammad, and surrounding regions.
