KARACHI: A gutka (betel) factory operating on the roof of a mosque in Karachi’s Rizvia Society was raided by the police on Tuesday.
According to Aaj News, the police confiscated equipment and ingredients used for making gutka from the mosque’s roof. SSP Asghar Ali reported that the illegal gutka production facility was managed by a man named Ashfaq, who had leased part of the mosque’s roof. The police are currently conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive suspect.
Earlier in May, the Anti-Smuggling Organisation of Customs Enforcement Karachi seized 3,000 kilograms of betel nuts from a warehouse in Korangi. Customs Intelligence officials also seized thousands of liters of Iranian diesel in a separate raid.
Irfan Ali, a spokesman for customs, stated that acting on a tip-off received by Customs Enforcement Karachi, the ASO and Anti-Smuggling Squad raided a warehouse near Korangi Industrial Area, Singer Chowrangi, and confiscated 3,000 kilograms of smuggled betel nuts worth Rs4 million. The seized goods have been transferred to the ASO Enforcement warehouse, and a case has been registered under the Customs Act with further investigations underway.
