The prime suspect arrested in the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl, Zehra, in Gujrat escaped police custody and was found dead on Friday under mysterious circumstances.
On January 5, the four-year-old Zehra, a resident of village Khohar Sarai Alamgir, was abducted, raped and killed.
Police officials police had confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the rape and murder case of four-year-old Zahra Junaid, following a DNA match.
The suspect was apprehended 11 days after the tragic incident and was scheduled to be presented in a local court on Friday.
The 34-year-old suspect was among five individuals detained during the investigation.
According to police officials, Muhammad Nadeem, the key accused in the case, was being transported to Khohar village to recover clothes he was allegedly wearing at the time of the crime.
During the transfer, Nadeem reportedly took advantage of the darkness and fog, pushed a constable, jumped out of the vehicle, and fled while still handcuffed.
The incident occurred late on Thursday (January 16) night. Police stated that they pursued the suspect and heard shouting, abusive language, and gunfire at one location.
An FIR filed regarding the incident revealed that unknown individuals fled when police approached the scene.
Upon reaching the spot, officers found the suspect critically injured. He was immediately taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was later identified as Muhammad Nadeem, the prime suspect in the Zahra case.
