GUJRAT: Local Police conducted another raid at the residence of former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi during the wee hours of Friday morning.
The police surrounded the Kunjah House, the former chief minister’s residence, and left after two hours without taking any action. No member of Elahi’s family was present in the house at the time of the raid.
It may be mentioned here that this is not the first time that the police have conducted a raid at Parvez Elahi’s house in Gujarat. In February, authorities had carried out raids at the Kunjah House. At that time, Elahi alleged that the raids on his home and other places were being conducted on the whims of the Punjab caretaker set-up and federal government.
Parvez Elahi, a member of the Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam (PMLQ), had joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) along with 10 of his MNAs in February this year. PMLQ and PTI both have alleged that they are being victimized by the caretaker provincial government under one pretext or another.
The reasons behind the raid are not clear yet, and there has been no official statement from the police or the government, however, it is believed that the raids were conducted after Elahi and some of his associates were booked by the anti-corruption department under various charges.
The incident has sparked concerns about political victimization and misuse of power. The opposition parties have criticized the move and called it an attempt to suppress political opponents.
