Journalist Syed Imran Shafqat has claimed that former spymaster General (retd) Faiz Hameed could face the death sentence for allegedly masterminding the May 9 riots.
The former spy chief is currently facing court marital after his arrest in August this year for alleged misconduct in a case related to a private housing scheme.
After the arrest, the Pakistani military said it had arrested retired Lieutenant-General Faiz Hameed, the former head of the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, to “ascertain the correctness” of complaints in a property case and “appropriate disciplinary action” was initiated against him.
The military said it acted against the top officer in accordance with the orders of the Supreme Court, which last year called for an investigation against Hameed after a land development company called Top City filed a petition, alleging Hameed had acquired ownership of some properties along with his brother and had even blackmailed the company’s owner.
Shafqat, during Hum News show “Faisla Aap Ka”, claimed that General Faiz’s case was likely to conclude before November or December. Earlier, senior journalist Nusrat Javed had aired his concern on ARY News on November 13. He had said, “I am afraid General Faiz Hameed will be convicted before November 24.”
Shafqat ruled out a military trial for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying, “No one wants to conduct a military trial of the former Prime Minister.”
On May 9, Imran khan was arrested by paramilitary rangers at the Islamabad high court in connection with the Al Qadir Trust case. His detention had sparked widespread protests across the country, leading to incidents whereby protesters targeted army installations.
