Gene Hackman, who gained fame in 1971 with his Oscar-winning role as the tough New York City narcotics officer Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in “The French Connection,” has passed away at his home in New Mexico, alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
From the iconic “The French Connection” to the memorable “The Royal Tenenbaums,” Hackman’s illustrious acting career spanned more than six decades. Turning 95 this year, Hackman was considered one of American cinema’s most reliable and talented actors. He earned Oscars for “The French Connection” (1971) and “Unforgiven” (1992), and received nominations for his roles in “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), “I Never Sang for My Father” (1970), and “Mississippi Burning” (1988).
