A Gem and Jewelry City will be established in Islamabad, Radio Pakistan reported on Wednesday.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Precious Stones, which was held in Islamabad yesterday with Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain in the chair, the report added.
It was also decided to establish an authority for the effective use of precious stones.
Besides, the meeting agreed to set up a Gemstone Export Processing Center as well as to facilitate foreign investment in the gemstone sector.
Additionally, Gemstone and Jewelry Centers will be established at international airports.
Federal Ministers Aleem Khan, Jam Kamal Khan, relevant secretaries, and other senior officials attended the meeting.
It should be noted that Pakistan is home to different precious stones that are being used in jewelry across the world, however, due to a lack of proper infrastructure the country does not fully benefit from this mass natural resource of wealth.
