Gas supply to parts of Quetta and nearby areas has been disrupted following a sharp drop in temperature to -6°C, causing a major gas pipeline to freeze, according to the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Tuesday.
An 18-inch diameter pipeline in Quetta froze due to the severe cold, particularly affecting areas such as Nawan Killi and its surrounding localities. In addition, gas supply has also been impacted in other areas, including Pishin, Kuchlak, Bostan, and Ziarat, due to extreme weather conditions.
SSGC’s spokesperson reported that technical teams have been working since 6 AM to thaw the frozen pipeline and restore gas supply to the affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted cold and dry weather across most parts of the country for the next 24 hours. Very cold and partly cloudy conditions are expected in hilly regions. Additionally, shallow to moderate fog is likely to form in patches in Northeast and South Punjab, as well as Upper Sindh, during the morning hours.
The PMD also noted that continental air is prevailing over much of the country, with a shallow westerly wave passing over the northern regions. Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather has dominated most areas, with very cold and partly cloudy conditions in the hilly regions.
