Police in Oman reported on Tuesday that a shooting at a mosque resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to several others. The Pakistani envoy in Muscat confirmed that the deceased were Pakistani nationals.
According to a statement from the Royal Oman Police, the shooting occurred in the Wadi Kabir neighborhood of Muscat, the capital of Oman, during a significant religious event for Shia Muslims. Authorities have not provided a motive or identified any suspects.
Footage from the scene shows individuals fleeing near the Imam Ali Mosque, with its minaret visible, as gunfire erupts. A voice is heard exclaiming, “Oh God!”
The Omani police stated they are taking “all necessary security measures and procedures … to handle the situation” and initially reported four fatalities and several injuries.
“The authorities are continuing to gather evidence and conduct investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police added on the social media platform X.
The Foreign Office said four Pakistanis were killed and Omani authorities “neutralised” the gunmen.
“Four Pakistanis were martyred as a result of gunshots in the dastardly terrorist attack on the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque,” it said in a statement.
“Another 30 Pakistanis are under treatment in hospitals,” it added, saying “the government of Oman has neutralised the attackers.”
Violence of this nature is rare in Oman, which is located on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula.
