Former Sindh governor and veteran PPP leader Kamaluddin Azfar died on Monday at the age of 95, according to his family.
Azfar, a seasoned politician and close associate of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, passed away at Ziauddin Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment, according to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh Secretary General Senator Waqar Mehdi.
Throughout his political career, Azfar held several prominent positions, including Sindh Minister for Finance, Planning and Development, Federal Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister. He also served as a senator before stepping down to assume the office of Governor Sindh in 1995, appointed by then-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Senator Waqar Mehdi noted that funeral arrangements would be finalized upon the arrival of Azfar’s children from abroad.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow over Azfar’s passing, describing him as a “wise politician” whose public service would be long remembered.
PPP Senator Sherry Rehman also paid tribute, stating she was “grieved” by his death. She highlighted Azfar’s role as a dedicated activist and policymaker from Karachi who collaborated closely with Benazir Bhutto on key local government reforms. “Prayers for his family and loved ones in this moment of loss,” she wrote in a message on X.
