A tragic incident occurred in Islamabad’s DHA Phase 5 on Tuesday morning as a father and his daughter were swept away by floodwaters during heavy monsoon rainfall.
According to initial reports, the victims—identified as Qazi Ishaq and his daughter, residents of Sector A, DHA Phase 5—were on their way to the daughter’s college when their car was caught in a rapidly flooding drainage channel. Eyewitnesses said the water level rose suddenly, giving the driver no time to react or escape.
Rescue teams have been searching for the missing duo for several hours, but as of now, no success has been reported in locating them.
The incident comes amid widespread flooding in the capital due to relentless monsoon rains. On Tuesday, authorities were forced to reopen the spillways of Rawal Dam after the water level exceeded 1,750 feet. This marks the second time in a week that the dam has reached capacity.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported heavy rainfall across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with Saidpur receiving 40mm, Golra 15mm, Shamsabad 18mm, and Rawalpindi’s Kacheri area recording 54mm.
In response, Rawalpindi authorities declared a rain emergency. WASA Managing Director Saleem Ashraf confirmed that all staff leave has been canceled and emergency crews are on high alert. Section 144 has been imposed in the city, prohibiting swimming and entry into seasonal streams.
In another flood-related development, the Noor Pur Shah Nullah near Bari Imam in Islamabad overflowed, worsening the flooding situation.
Meanwhile, continuous monsoon rains also triggered landslides in Murree, particularly along the Chara Gali-Bastal Road. Several vehicles carrying passengers were trapped due to falling debris. Rescue operations were launched promptly, and at least 11 people have been rescued so far, while one was hospitalized.
In Namb Jhanda Gali village, a massive boulder fell on two houses. Emergency response teams, aided by residents, were dispatched to the area to assist with the situation.
